| Australian Government’s Digital Education Revolution - $154,000 for HVGS |
In the 2008 Budget, the Australian Government announced $1.1 billion over five years for the National Secondary School Computer Fund. This fund will provide grants of up to $1 million to eligible schools to help with the provision of new or upgraded ICT for secondary students in Years 9-12. In March those schools eligible were contacted and encouraged to apply for Round One Funding. More than 95% of eligible schools, which included HVGS, applied. As a result of our application the School has been awarded $154,000 in funding to purchase new computers.
Hunter Valley Grammar School would like to acknowledge the Federal Government for its initiative in recognising the need for upgrading IT facilities in schools and express its appreciation for the awarding of this grant. |

| It was “All About the Music” |
 |
 |
Last Tuesday evening, June 10, the Annual Concert for our School Music Ensembles was held in the Cameron Centre. The concert was a showcase of the varied ensembles within our music program and involved over 150 students performing and a team of almost 40 staff and students involved in presenting the evening.
The concert started with a “bang” with our Percussion Ensemble almost lifting the roof off the Cameron Centre with their enthusiastic drumming performance, conducted by our percussion teacher Mr Steve Morton. A total of 17 ensembles performed on the evening that commenced at 6.00pm and concluded just before 8.00pm. The large and enthusiastic audience were then treated to a delicious supper in the foyer of the Cameron Centre after the concert before heading home. |

| ‘A Moment in Time’ Photography Club Exhibition |
 |
 |
The Photography Club held its first exhibition, “A Moment in Time”, at the impressive “The Mansfield” in High Street Maitland on Wednesday evening, 18 June. The Photography Club is a co-curricular activity offered by the school under the astute leadership of Mrs Nadine McVernon. The exhibition featured the works of our school photographers. Refreshments were provided with all of the photographers available to discuss their work. It was a new event and a spectacular success. The significance of the event was highlighted by the fact that the Lord Mayor of Maitland was in attendance. The exhibition continues until Monday. On behalf of the school I extend special thanks and gratitude to John Murphy and family for their generous support with respect to the venue, catering and publicity of the event. Congratulations to the artists and Mrs McVernon for a wonderful exhibition of photography. |

| Outdoor Education Program |
 |
 |
As part of the School’s commitment to the holistic education of all students, an Outdoor Education program has been developed for students in Years 3 to 11. The fundamental aim of this program is to challenge and extend students to maximise their potential not only intellectually, but also emotionally, spiritually and physically. This program may involve both classroom lessons and a range of activities in the outdoors. The principle activity each year is a Camp.
Each camp is designed with a program of experiential learning activities appropriate to the students attending and in keeping with the overall aims of the program. Students will participate in a range of activities which may include bushwalking, orienteering, abseiling, rock climbing, canoeing, expeditions, initiative challenges and activities associated with camping.
The Camps are designed to assist students develop the following range of attributes:
- Self-awareness
- Independence
- Confidence
- Self-discipline
- Communication skills
- Leadership skills
- The ability to work with others in a team
- Problem solving skills
- Initiative
- Flexibility and consideration for others
- Outdoor/camping skills
- An appreciation for the environment
Above all it is hoped that the camps will engender in students a love for adventure and the outdoors while empowering them (through their experiences) to be better citizens.

| Commendation Scheme |
 |
 |
The school seeks to recognise student achievement and commitment in three broad areas, academic, co-curricular and service. Formal recognition is realised by the awarding of commendations, commendation certificates and commendation awards.
There are other ways that teachers and coaches recognise achievement and commitment; they do not form part of this scheme, however they are an important part of recognising student contribution. |

| Emergency Parking and Disabled Parking |
 |
 |
Please observe these parking restrictions; they are terribly important to the school as part of our care toward our students and visitors.
It is vital they remain available at all times. It is not appropriate for parents to use these spaces, simply because they cannot find a park. If parks are not available at pick up time, parents are asked to park in neighbouring streets and enter the grounds as the traffic within clears.

The generosity of our students and families in the earthquake appeal has been astounding. The children who have purchased the Olympic Souvenirs in an effort to raise money to help the victims of the Chinese earthquake have shown a deep and global understanding of helping people in crisis. In addition to the money raised through the sale of the items, a further $500 was donated by AMSI (Australian Mining Services International), and the funds raised by the Junior School SRC will also go towards this effort.

We are in the process of producing the Subject Selection Book for Year 9 into 10 (2009).
A Parent/Student Information Session will be held in Term 3 on Monday 4 August, to allow parents and students to hear our Director of Studies and Heads of Faculty issue final information about Subjects and Subject Selection Guidelines for Year 9, 2009.
Also discussed will be the Board of Studies Mandatory Hour Requirements as well as any pre-requisite requirements or recommendations for later study in Stage 6 (Years 11 and 12).
Students will receive their own copy of the Selection Booklet on Tuesday, 24 June, during Tutor Group, so there is adequate time, over the holidays for reading and discussion with parents. |

| Junior School on Show |
 |
 |
Term Three traditionally serves as a time for us to engage our students in cultural pursuits.
Each section of Primary will be holding their cultural extravaganza on:
- Thursday evening of Week 5
- Stage 2: Years 3 and 4
- Thursday evening of Week 6
- Stage 3: Years 5 and 6
- Thursday evening of Week 7
- Stage 1: Years K-2
Each evening will commence at 6.00pm and will run for up to 1 hour. We have moved to this arrangement in an effort to relieve those families that have children in more than one stage with a less demanding schedule than 3 nights in one week. We also hope that by holding the event on a Thursday night it will enable most families to have less impact.
We will have additional After School Care facilities available for those who travel a great distance on the night and will look to provide a more substantial afternoon tea. Please contact me should you need to avail yourself of these facilities. |

We hope to see a number of parents on this night.

| Good For Kids Good For Life |
 |
 |
Our school has joined the AIS and Hunter New England Health in leading the way for our children to become responsible students who are aware of the lifestyle choices that they can make in order to be healthy and fit. We feel that at HVGS we can provide a unique environment where our children will have every opportunity to engage in healthy eating, to understand the importance of water in the daily diet and the role vegetables and fruit play.
We are already providing a comprehensive PE and Sport program, while looking to enhance our recreational school time, recess and lunch, with further equipment to encourage physical participation. From the beginning of the year years 3-6 have had the opportunity to borrow a variety of sport materials donated by our 2007 Yr 6 students, we now also have a range of equipment available for our younger students. Each week we will be publishing further information for families and will be outlining school initiatives to promote the project.

| Year 10 into Year 11 Information Seminars |
Year 10 students spent two half-day sessions recently investigating the many and varied options before them when considering what to do as they finish the School Certificate and look ahead to Year 11 and Year 12. This inevitably raises many questions, and this is, at least in part, the intention of these sessions.
We tried to expose our students not only to the raw information, but to a range of people who could give them first hand accounts of what they have done with their scholastic lives. Our guest presenters included students currently at university who had started off in one direction studying for one degree, and then changed tack totally; current Year 12 students who spoke of their courses, and what they involve, the pitfalls and the positives; and a representative from the University of Newcastle who gave an insight in to what university is all about, and how it all works.
Janelle Howell, our Careers Adviser, the Heads of House, Margaret Finucane and I are all available to answer questions which you as parents might have. Indeed, we have been fielding numerous questions already, and these will no doubt continue until the combined Parent/Teacher and Information Evening to be held in Week 2 of next term.
All families with students in Year 10 will receive a letter about this shortly. I would encourage all families to fix that appointment in your diaries as it is an important time for your son or daughter. |

| Student Talent |
 |
 |
We are truly fortunate to have many very talented performers in our midst, and the talented, dedicated staff who help really bring this to the fore.
The recent “It’s All About The Music” evening was a wonderful showcase of student performers, and I really enjoyed the opportunity to assist backstage for that evening. Congratulations to all students, music teachers, accompanists and back stage and sound crews for the hard work which went in to such a great evening.
Of course, this week will see the performances of the long-awaited “A Midsummer Night’s Midterm” and I look forward to assisting backstage with this show as well. I know how hard the whole team behind such a show works in the lead up to the performances as well as on the actual performance evenings, and I hope the audiences appreciate and thoroughly enjoy an excellent production. |

| Parent Teacher Interviews |
In a recent survey we conducted which looked at the school’s strengths and weaknesses in the area of communication, many felt that there were issues with the organization of Parent/Teacher evenings. This included the booking system, as well as the appointment system. We have been investigating different options to address the first area which we might well be in a position to trial very soon. This will involve an online booking system whereby you as a parent have the ability to book times directly online for your interviews, thereby not having to rely on students to do this for you. We know that some students are very diligent about this, and others are not, so the aim is that you can do this yourself from home or work over the internet. More about this soon.
Reminder Year 10 interviews are on Monday 28 July and Year 12 on Wednesday 23 July. |

Year 11 Legal Studies competed in the fourth round of the Law Society Mock Trial against St Phillips Christian College Salamander. As the prosecution in an assault case our barristers; Jackson Lambkin and Kim Masson with the assistance of solicitor Jake Mclean submitted a very convincing argument to the magistrate who found the defendant guilty of an assault. The prosecution witnesses; Amba Bagnall and Alex Austin presented their evidence convincingly and handled cross examination with ease. | HICES Debating |
HVGS hosted Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College on Wednesday last week in Round 4 of the HICES Competition. The Middle School successfully argued their way to a victory from a tough affirmative position. Sebastian Riorden, Sascha Halpin and new-comer Bronte Coleman presented a solid team line with good tips and support from Laure-Elise Kenworthy.
The Senior School team presented a mixed debate, as did the opposition, on the topic “There is no such thing as a just war”. Conrad Bond supported as silent fourth team member, as Kate Weatherall, Sophia Halpin and Isabella Moore did their best against an ultimately victorious Bishop Tyrrell team.
The Opens Team impressed the adjudicator with a well supported definition and team line in their debate. In a close call, HVGS pipped the opposition at the end, continuing the winning streak of seasoned debaters Danika Palmar, Ewen Macpherson and Sophie Thompson. The final round will take place after school at Newcastle Grammar on Wednesday 25 June. |

| Activities in TAS |
This term has seen the TAS faculty once again involved in numerous activities around the school. Currently, Mrs Oliver’s Hospitality class and Mrs Howell’s Food Technology class have been madly preparing food and making costumes for the school production which is shaping up to be the calendar event of the year. Mr Redhead and his senior construction class with assistance from Mr Condie have turned their hand to constructing props for the production, creating a forest of trees and numerous other items.
Within the classroom, Year 7 and 8 are wrapping up their current unit with some very creative boxes, bird feeders and elaborate robotic programming, while Mr Blake’s Year 12 Design and Technology class are working solidly on their major projects.
Once again the workshop will be open during the holidays for Mr Blake’s senior Design and Technology students on Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 July, from 8:30am until 3:00pm. This will be the last allocated holiday time available to students before their projects are due. The first week of the holidays will also see our Year 12 Hospitality and Construction students participating in their mandatory work placement activities.

| Boys Football - Bill Turner Cup |
 |
 |
A skilful and enthusiastic Maitland High team were too good for an undermanned HVGS team missing 5 of their squad in this 2nd round clash.
Maitland High's midfield dominated the game from the onset and after just 5 minutes took the lead after a beautiful long range shot rocketed into the top right corner of our goal.
Ten minutes later Maitland high doubled their lead and just before half time scored a third to take a well deserved 3 goal lead at half time. To the credit of the HVGS side the boys went out in the second half with their heads still up and a belief that they could still win the game. They created a number of chances early in the second half but could not capitalise on these chances with some fairly ineffective shooting.
When Maitland scored a fourth with less than ten minutes to go all hope of an unlikely victory were gone but still the boys did not give in and Captain Jesse Caulfield scored a late goal to give a final score line of 1-4. Lachlan Rowen, Damon Mills and William Anstis deserve special mention for their efforts and play, they were tireless in a well beaten side.

| HRIS Basketball |
 |
 |
The Junior Boys HRIS Basketball team had a lot on the line this year as the carry over champions and the team looked very promising on paper. Unfortunately we came up against Central Coast for the first game and their height proved exceptionally challenging.
The boys fought back on several occasions throughout the game but were beaten by a better team on the day. The second game was a nail biting finish and some ball handling problems were our demise in the final moments of the game.
The boys easily won the next two games to finish a credible third for 2008. The boys were a little disappointed with their result but sometimes these hiccups are great motivators for future developments. All players demonstrated superb sportsmanship throughout the tournament and they were a pleasure to work with.
The team consisted of the following boys:
Marcel Bray, Jesse Caulfield, Miles Cole-Clark, William Hamilton, Josh Kennedy, Matt Palmer, Ben Reynolds, Angus Thompson, Ben Youngman.
A big thanks to Mr Reynolds for looking after the bench for us for every game.

Again due to a clash of dates, a hangover of EI, the HVGS Equestrian Championships have to be rescheduled. Hopefully a date can be decided upon before the end of the Term. Watch this space and the School’s website.

Chris Edwards, Harry Foulcher, Chris Farmer, Ross Jeans and Sam Hobden were representatives of the all conquering Hunter All Schools team at the NSW Country Schools Championships on the 6-9 June. Hunter defeated Far North Coast, Mid North Coast, Central North, Western and had a draw with New England on their way to a 5th straight title. Chris Edwards was named as player of the tournament.
From the Country Schools Carnival Chris Edwards, Michael Howell and Sam Hobden were selected in the NSW Country Schools 1st XV to play at NSW All Schools Trials from 27-29 June. Harry Foulcher was selected in the Shadow team. Chris Farmer was selected in the Country Schools 16’s.
In 2009 Michael Howell and Chris Farmer will tour NZ with the Country Schools Development team. James Margan (Year 6) has become our second ever CIS Primary representative. James is a talented hooker who will play in the PSSA Championships.
From the AICES Rugby trials held on 12 June, Kynan Stahl, Simon White and Hugh James were selected in the AICES team to play at the NSW All Schools Trials from June 27-29 June. Chris Farmer made the open and 16’s AICES teams; a few decisions to be made there!
Nathan Oliver, Tim Evans and Joe Andrews were selected in the AICES 16’s team to play in the NSW Schools 16’s trials on 28 June.
A reminder that it is mandatory for all rugby players to have a mouthguard.

| 16 Year’s Rugby Report |
Wednesday of next week will see the official start of the 16’s rugby season with a hit out against Singleton at Bull Park, starting at 4:00pm. It would be great to see a good turnout of supporters to cheer on the team. At this stage the team have had a bye in both of their current competitions, resulting in the boys looking forward to the pending game. Last week saw some of our players travel to Sydney, as members of the HRIS team competing in the AICES carnival. It was a great competition and a great opportunity for our students to play representative football at the next level. This was the inaugural year of the 16’s involvement at the carnival which undoubtedly added some depth to the talent at the event.
Our congratulations go to: Nathan Oliver, Tim Evans, Joe Andrews, Hugh James, Chris Farmer, Kynan Stahl and Simon White. These players have been selected to represent AICES at the next level of Representative Rugby. By far it has been the largest contingent of HVGS representative rugby players to date.

| Exam Support |
Parents and Friends are needed to help give students support during exam time. If you are interested in being Readers and / or Writers or helping with supervision please contact Kathy Willmott on 0413 331489 (anytime) or 4930 9123 (night). We will hold an information session before the exams. As some of the Parents and Friends who have supported this important task have returned to the workforce new volunteers are needed.

| International Students |
The Language department would like some Parents and Friends to come along and chat with the overseas students. These conversations would help the students become more fluent with their use of the English language. It would also provide us with some insight into life in other countries. It is fun and informative for both the student and the volunteer. If you are interested please ring Kathy Willmott 0413 331489 or 4930 9123. |

 |
Everone is welcome to become a volunteer either on Tuesday and Thursday. This can be weekly, fortnightly or monthly, whatever suits!.
New volunteers are always placed with regulars so they are able to learn the routine. Occasional get-togethers are organised so we get to know each other as we don’t all work at the same time.
The work includes:
- Sorting through clothing items brought in by clients to ensure they are suitable to sell
- Recording these items against owner’s and helping customers with their choices as necessary
Please contact Mrs Relma Adlam on 4930 6706 or let Mrs Diane Towers in the Administration Front Office know if you are interested.
Regards
Relma Adlam |

| Reminder of Lunch Order Procedure |
Please write lunch order on a paper bag with money enclosed securely. We can only be responsible for what arrives at the canteen (we will wrap any change and place it in the bag). Students then place order in lunch basket in the class room.
If food item ordered is not on the menu that day, it will be replaced with either a vegemite or cheese sandwich. If your child has a food allergy please notify me in writing. If your child is missing an item from their lunch order, please ask them to come up to the canteen.
If a student has forgotten their lunch or lunch money they must get a note from a teacher and bring it to the canteen. An IOU note will be given to them and we ask that this be paid promptly.
Fruit Salad will not be available. We will have a variety of fresh fruit $0.80c.
Pumpkin Soup and a Dinner Roll will be available for $2.50. Students who order Soup, Hot Noodles ($2.00) or Hot Chocolate ($1.30) must come to the canteen to collect they will not be placed in lunch baskets.
